First and foremost, the success of solid wastes management through their recycling into useful products and, in fact, any waste management strategy depends on how well the mixed solid wastes are separated into different components. Meanwhile, storing wastes together make recycling operations a very tedious exercise. It reduces the productivity and increases cost of production at waste recycling plant. This secondary separation at waste recycling site requires skill and time, making the recycling process labour intensive with attendant cost implication. Research has shown that waste collection and segregation into different components account for largest share of total costs of solid wastes recycling. It does not give room for resource conservation through waste recycling.

Recyclable fractions of mixed wastes can be segregated and transported into recycling centre by different methods. It is also possible for waste producers to bring recyclable wastes directly to recycling facility without being charged for waste disposal service. Waste sorting can also be done by waste collection team who quickly remove valuable materials from waste stream on their way to land fill.

Modes of waste collection and transportation also have great impact on waste segregation and recycling operation. The methods that favour waste recycling and material recovery should be considered as permanent solution to persistent waste management problems in the country.

How many plastic bottles do you throw away per week? Soda, soft drinks and even water now come in plastic bottles. Nowadays, people tend to use more plastic bottles than glass bottles, because they are lighter and easier to use and can be thrown away afterwards.

Let us tell you about plastics in detail.

There are two types of plastics; thermoplastics and thermoset plastics. Out of the two types of plastics, thermoplastics are easier to recycle.

Food wrap and water pipes are manufactured from these plastics.

Many plastic bags, shrink wrap and garment bags are made using these plastics.

Refrigerated containers, bottle tops and chairs are manufactured from these plastics.

* No. 7 – Other usually layered or mixed plastics

There is no PET recycling machine potential for these plastics.

Out of these types, only PET recycling machine and PE can be recycled. Though PET recycling machine is not done on a major scale in Sri Lanka, we have a few small scale PET recycling plants here.

We turn these bottles into another ingredient and export it to China,” said the owner of the recycling plant, Anura Jasenthuliyana.

When the bottles reach the PET recycling machine plant, they are sorted out.

“We get only PET bottles, so, we don’t have to worry about the type of plastic.

“The darker the bottle, the lower its selling price. Five PET recycling machine manufacturer bottles yield enough fibre for one extra large t-shirt, while 25 two-litre bottles can produce a sweater. Most products which are manufactured from recycled material can’t be recycled for the second time.

One phone recycled does little good, but if everyone who has old mobile phones recycles then everyone is helping to keep the environment cleaner, not just for ourselves, but the generations that are going to come after us.

Again, your used mobile phone could save someone’s life. Many mobile phone recycling centres pay for the phones because there are copper, gold and other precious metals that are used in the manufacturing of these phones. Recycling is the socially responsible action to take.
